North Trail High School is an in-person learning environment. As such, students complete their programming through regularly scheduled classes at the school. In accordance with the Alberta Education Act, students have a responsibility to attend school and engage in their learning. At NTHS, students are expected to attend regularly, arrive on time, and actively participate in all scheduled classes. Maintaining a full in-person timetable supports student achievement, engagement, school connectedness, and graduation success.
Students must be enrolled in the required minimum number of in-person courses each semester. *Please note that online courses do not count toward the minimum in-person course load requirements at North Trail High School.
| Grade | Minimum Course Load | Semester Structure | Credit Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 10 | 8 courses | 4 + 4 | ~40 credits |
| Grade 11 | 7 courses (incl. CALM) | 4 + 3 (or 3 + 4) | ~33 credits |
| Grade 12 | 6 courses | 3 + 3 | ~30 credits |

Minimum In-Person Enrollment Requirements at North Trail High School during the regular school day (8:55 a.m.–3:30 p.m.)
- Grade 10: Students must be enrolled in a minimum of four (4) in-person courses each semester.
- Grade 11: Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 in-person courses each semester plus CALM 20 (3 credits). Students who have already completed CALM 20 prior to Grade 11 must instead be enrolled in a minimum of 6 courses during the school year.
- Grade 12: Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 in-person courses each semester.
Students enrolled in a J-block course (before or after school, for example, Band) do not automatically receive an additional spare during the regular timetable. This decision will be made on a case-by-case basis with the Student Services Team and Administration.
In-person learning provides students with direct access to teachers, collaborative learning opportunities, and authentic assessment practices that are essential for long-term academic success. Online learning could be an option in specific circumstances, such as upgrading a previously completed course, retaking a class in a failed course, or completing a CBe-learn summer school course. However, online courses do not replace the minimum in-person course load required for students attending North Trail High School.
