Course Change Policies – 2025/26
Course Change Windows:
Course change requests will only be accepted during the following dates:
- Semester 1: August 17–24
- Semester 2: December 1–7
Outside of these windows, course changes will not be accommodated unless it is a course withdrawal, and only if the student has sufficient credits remaining in their timetable.
Course Change Requests Will Not Be Approved For:
- Requests for specific teachers or to be with peers
- Preferred periods or semesters
- Repeating a course that has already been completed
- Adding a course without having credit for the prerequisite
- Grade 12 students requesting to add a Grade 10 course
- Requests to upgrade to a higher academic stream (e.g., from -2 to -1) within Grade 10 or 11.
- Note: Upgrades are only permitted through online options, summer school or in Grade 12.
Example: A student who wishes to upgrade to -1 English may take ELA 30-2 in Semester 1, followed by ELA 30-1 in Semester 2.
- Note: Upgrades are only permitted through online options, summer school or in Grade 12.
Spare Block Guidelines:
- Grade 12: May have 1 spare (minimum 70 credits) or 2 spares (minimum 75 credits)
- Grade 11: May have 1 spare (minimum 38 credits)
- Grade 10: Not eligible for spares
Part-Time Status (Grade 12 Only)
Grade 12 students with a strong graduation plan may request to become part-time (fewer than 6 classes). To do this, they must:
- Email their Student Advisor
- Receive parental approval
Student Services does not recommend taking fewer than 6 classes due to the following important considerations:
- Post-secondary eligibility: Part time status can potentially impact post-secondary goals. Certain post-secondary institutions and scholarship opportunities take into consideration the academic rigour of a student’s program and part time status would not meet the threshold for these opportunities.
- Eligibility for Honor Roll: North Trail High School's Honor Roll requires students to be enrolled in 6 in-person classes.
- Schedule adjustments: Part-time students will be scheduled into either morning or afternoon blocks. Students will not be able to choose when their classes occur and cannot remain in the school building during their non-class periods.
- Final decision: Once approved, part-time status cannot be reversed and additional courses cannot be added back.
Students and parents are strongly encouraged to carefully consider the academic and future planning impacts of becoming a part-time student before making this request.
Summer School
Summer School registration is now closed. Please see the CBE Summer School page for more information.
Concurrent CBe-Learn Online Course Requests
Students in Grades 11 and 12 may request to enroll in a concurrent online course while attending in-person classes at NTHS. Enrollment is subject to course availability, with priority given to Grade 12 students.
A digital request form will be distributed via School Messenger in late August for Semester 1 and in early December for Semester 2.
Please note that most online courses offered through CBe-Learn include occasional in-person assessments.
