Good Afternoon Nighthawk Families:

Professional Learning

Maatoomsii’Pookaiks

Today was the CBE’s system-wide Maatoomsii’Pookaiks (Maah-doom-see’Boo-gaaks) (Children First) Indigenous Education Professional Learning Day. This professional learning day was designed for all staff, regardless of role, to participate in developing foundational knowledge of Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing and knowing.

At North Trail, our initial plans for land based learning were thwarted by the wind, so we pivoted and spent the morning reflecting on "Reading the School as Memory and Possibility". Staff were tasked with reflecting on four questions connected to the 4Rs of Relationship, Renewal, Respect, and Reciprocity.

  • What relationships are visible, even when no one is here?
  • Where do you see learning evolving? Where might it be stuck?
  • What does respect look like in a space when no one is watching?
  • What does this space give to students? What does it ask of them in return?

In the afternoon, we worked in departments to examine how the 4Rs could be reflected in our classrooms and our lesson planning. Staff then collaborated to create tasks/lessons that integrated Indigenous ways of Knowing and Doing.

Celebrations

Student Directed Works

Last night the Drama Society performed their showcase of student directed works. Drama and Tech Students have been working all semester after school and during class  on various scenes to then combine into a cohesive show. They did an amazing job, and we are so proud of how they came together to celebrate their work, demonstrate leadership, professionalism, and artistry. Thank you to Mrs. Mckeown, Ms. Laurie, and other staff members who gave of their time to support this event.

Canadian Computing Competition

We had 6 students compete in the University of Waterloo’s Canadian Computing Competition (CCC) this year. This test is not for the faint at heart. All results are out of 75, with the problems getting consistently more difficult and complex. One of our students scored as high as 66/75.

Art 30 AP

This week, Victoria S completed the final pieces for her Art 30 AP portfolio. In her ceramic work, she painstakingly handcrafted flowers of different shapes and sizes that are a distinctive feature of her work. Victoria's Ceramic Pieces
