Good Afternoon, Nighthawk Families

Last Thursday we had a full house for our Meet the Teacher evening. Debate and robotics students showcased their skills while parents had an opportunity to connect with teachers. Thank you to the Leadership students who greeted families, manned the parking lot, and directed families throughout the building.   

Truth & Reconciliation in September 

Truth & Reconciliation Week – Sept. 21 to 25 - The CBE acknowledges Truth and Reconciliation Week each year in alignment with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. Truth and Reconciliation week invites all CBE staff, students, and families to engage in meaningful learning, reflection, and action. To advance the CBE Education Plan Goal: Truth & Reconciliation, schools and teams are invited to create opportunities that deepen understanding of the histories, experiences, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples. At NTHS, on Wednesday, students will be examining the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action.  

Orange Shirt Day 

Schools and teams are also invited to plan an Orange Shirt Day learning opportunity between Sept. 21 and 29, leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation/Orange Shirt Day on Sept. 30. Wearing orange on Orange Shirt Day honours Survivors of residential schools, remembers the children who never returned home, and acknowledges the lasting impacts of residential schools on families and communities. The orange shirt is a symbol of the culture, language, identity, and freedom that were taken from Indigenous children, and a reminder that Every Child Matters.

Parking Passes

Parking pass applications are available for pick up in the office. These forms will need to be signed by parents and students need to have a valid license and insurance. Forms are due on September 25. There are only a limited number of spots, so hand-in your forms as soon as possible.  

NTHS Café 

On Monday, the NTHS O'Kaani café will be open for the semester and will offer full service. Please see the attached menu for the next few weeks.

Grade 12 Scholarship Opportunities  

The Loran Award  is a comprehensive four-year undergraduate leadership-enrichment program and monetary scholarship granted annually to 36 young Canadians entering university. Selection for this award focuses on students with strength of character, a deep commitment to community service, and exceptional leadership potential. Students must also demonstrate strong academic achievement, requiring a minimum 88% average.    

The University of Toronto National Book Award is a non-monetary recognition program that honours top Canadian Grade 12 students for superior academic performance, creative thinking and community leadership. Grade 12 students are welcome to nominate themselves through this form. The selected candidate will then be eligible to apply for the prestigious U of T National Scholarship Program.
