Mayor’s Visit to NTHS

On Monday, March 4 Social Studies and Leadership students from North Trail had the opportunity to participate in the Calgary Mayor’s Youth Council with Mayor Gondek in the theater. The Mayor’s Youth Council provides engagement opportunities to youth, and helps to support youth voice in civic affairs. During the hour long event at North Trail, Mayor Gondek give a brief introduction about herself, how she got into civic politics and talked about her role as Mayor. She then participated in a question and answer discussion with our students. Our students asked Mayor Gondek   many thoughtful, pertinent questions and we really appreciated the opportunity to have their ideas and thoughts on civic affairs heard.

Indigenous Arts Night

On the evening of Wednesday, February 28, we had the honour of hosting Aisinna'kiiks. Aisinna'kiiks is a 4 part dinner and dialogue series  bringing together Indigenous Elders, Indigenous and local artists, students, teachers and members of the Calgary Arts community. Chef Sabrina and her team of Culinary Arts students created and served an elegant and delicious 3 course meal, the Art students created centrepieces for the tables and Leadership students helped with other tasks. It was an incredible opportunity to share a meal, share stories and experience the work of artists.

What we’ve been up to…

On March 21 and 22, we will be holding our semester two Parent-Teacher Conferences to give you and your child(ren) an opportunity to speak with teachers about their progress. Over the past two years we have learned that many families value online meetings and that some prefer meeting face to face so this year we are offering a blended model for these conferences. The schedule for these conferences will be as follows:

  • In person conferences will be held on Thursday, March 21 from 5:00pm-8:00pm
  • Online conferences will be held on Friday, March 22 from 9:00am – 1:30pm

Community News

We want to celebrate Ramadan with you! Our Muslim Student Society has been busy planning an Iftar (dinner) on March 14 from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. The event is being sponsored by Jerusalem Shawarma and Euphoria Cafe and is a fully catered meal. Because this is our first year planning this event, tickets are limited and we encourage families to purchase early to avoid missing out. Tickets are $15 each and they are sold in the Moyis at lunch every day until we run out of tickets! Students can purchase tickets for themselves and for their family members. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to gather as a community and enjoy some good food! Payment can be made with cash, debit or credit card.

Music News

Yesterday, the North Trail Jazz Band performed at the AIBF Jazz Festival! They had a solid performance (with some first-time nerves), while rocking some very fun accessories (like fish shoes and Squirtle glasses lol). We scored particularly high in the students' improvised solos, which is awesome considering that many of these students have been working away at building their confidence to perform an improvised solo in front of a crowd!
